“I let the fabric tell me what it wants to be,” Sam-Venn says,as she cut extra fabric from a newly sewn collar seam. “I choosethe fabric and I let the fabric help set the design.”

Selvedge Studio is a fabric and sewing supply shop on the HipStrip on Higgins Avenue started by mother-daughter duo, Mary Ryanand Leah Morrow. Their Project Selvedge is cleverly modeled after”Project Runway,” a reality TV fashion design competition hosted bysupermodel Heidi Klum.

“I’m a huge fan of ‘Project Runway,’ ” Morrow said. “It’samazing what people can come up with when they’re given a deadline,challenge and fabric.”

For six years, talented local fashion designers like Sam-Vennhave found a spot to showcase their garments and develop theirskills through Project Selvedge. now, the work of Selvedgedesigners has caught the eye of its muse.

On “Project Runway,” 16 fashion designers are given a smallbudget and one day to create designs. they compete for a prize thatincludes a spot showing their designs at at Mercedes-BenzFashionWeek in New York City and thousands of dollars worth ofequipment to help launch their own fashion lines.

The show is now casting designers for its 10th season andSelvedge received a “Project Runway” email last week urging itsdesigners to apply.

Selvedge keeps a Facebook page and website updated with thedesigners’ work from each show, hoping to get the names and designsout to the world. Ryan also sent an email to “Project Runway”mentor Tim Gunn.

With his signature phrase, “Make it work,” Gunn has become oneof the most popular elements of the show, guiding designers throughtight spots while giving feedback and support. Ryan called Gunngraceful and encouraging, someone who would be a great judge at theSelvedge shows. Gunn hasn’t gotten back to them, but they thinktheir work to market the Selvedge designers helped bring the”Project Runway” solicitation their way.

If a Selvedge designer were to get a spot on”Project Runway,” it would mean an incredible opportunity formarketing and growing a design portfolio, Morrow said. the winneralso gets a large stipend and a host of tools to help launch theirown line.

Several Selvedge designers have applied for “Project Runway” inthe past. They’ve found the application process is as much aboutpersonality and “the drama factor” as it is about their portfolio,Morrow said.

Though none have made the show yet, Selvedge competitors havepursued fashion design as a bigger part of their professionallives.

One designer left a career as a legal assistant to show infashion week. And Jax Hats founder Jackie Priess was the winner ofthe first Project Selvedge.

Sam-Venn, who has been too busy in the past raising a family todo much sewing, has enjoyed reconnecting with her passion.

“The best part is I feel alive again,” she said. “Just cominghere and feeling the fabric in my hand, and seeing all thefabric.”

Sam-Venn watched “Project Runway” when it first aired. Justwatching the TV show reminded her of the rush she felt at fashiondesign school, working 12-hour days in the studio to createpatterns and designs. will she ever apply to be a designer on”Project Runway” ?

“I would consider it, yes,” she said.

Both Morrow and Ryan are designers, but say they’re too busyrunning the store to apply. But they do want to remain a conduitfor bringing out the fashion designer in creative people.

“Our role is encouragement,” Morrow said.

This year’s Project Selvedge has five challenges and eightdesigners left. the winner of this year’s competition will receive$500 in fabric from Selvedge, a $150 gift certificate to Betty’sDivine, a photo shoot package from Susman Media and various sewingtools.
